How to Work Out a Tip and Split the Bill

To find a tip, multiply the bill by the tip percentage. A 20% tip on $84.50 is $16.90, for a total of $101.40. Split three ways, that is $33.80 each. This tool does the math for any tip rate and any group size up to 100 people.

A quick mental trick helps when you are away from your phone. For 10%, move the decimal point one place left: $84.50 becomes $8.45. Double it for 20% ($16.90). For 15%, add half of the 10% figure ($8.45 + $4.23 = $12.68). The table below lists common bills at four popular rates.

Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service. Others tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small: on a $100 meal with 8% tax, a 20% tip is $20 before tax or $21.60 after. Enter whichever amount you prefer.
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then double it. On a $47 bill, 10% is $4.70, so 20% is $9.40. For 15%, add half of the 10% amount: $4.70 + $2.35 = $7.05. Round up if you want an even number.
