How Big Is an Acre, a Hectare or a Square Meter?

People most often need it for homes and land. House sizes are listed in square feet in the US and in square meters in most other places. Farms and building plots are sold by the acre in the US and UK, and by the hectare almost everywhere else. A hectare is 100 m by 100 m, which is about 2.5 acres.

The most common mistake is using a length factor for an area. One meter is 3.28 feet, but one square meter is 3.28 x 3.28 = 10.76 square feet. Multiply by 3.28 and your answer will be about three times too small. The same goes the other way: 1 square foot is 0.093 m², not 0.3048.

One acre is exactly 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square meters. An American football field without the end zones is 48,000 square feet, so an acre is about 90 percent of one. A plot 208.7 feet on each side is almost exactly one acre.
Multiply by 10.76391. So 100 square meters is 1,076.39 square feet, and a 50 square meter flat is about 538 square feet. To go from square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.092903 or divide by 10.76391. A 2,000 square foot house is about 186 square meters.
Because area has two dimensions. One meter is 3.28 feet, but one square meter is 3.28 feet by 3.28 feet, which is 10.76 square feet. Multiplying an area by 3.28 would make it about three times too small. Always use the squared factor for areas.
A hectare is 10,000 square meters, the area of a square 100 meters on each side. That is 2.47 acres. One square kilometer holds exactly 100 hectares, and a square mile holds 259. Outside the US and UK, farms and forests are usually measured in hectares.
A square mile holds exactly 640 acres. It is also 2.59 square kilometers, or 259 hectares. Old US land surveys divided land into square-mile sections, and a quarter section of 160 acres was a common farm size.
