US Cups and Gallons Versus Liters

One US gallon is 3.785 liters, and one liter is about 4.23 US cups. This converter works with liters, milliliters, US gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons and teaspoons. Enter an amount in one unit and it lists all the others.

In the kitchen, the US units fit together in a simple chain. Three teaspoons make a tablespoon, and 16 tablespoons make a cup. Two cups make a pint, 2 pints make a quart, and 4 quarts make a gallon. A US cup is 236.6 mL, which many recipes round to 240 mL.

The biggest trap is that "gallon", "pint" and "cup" do not mean the same thing everywhere. Every US unit here is a US customary measure. A UK gallon is 4.546 liters, about 20 percent more than a US gallon. A UK pint is 568 mL, not 473 mL. Metric cups in Australia and Canada are 250 mL. If a British recipe says a pint of milk, convert it through milliliters rather than US pints.

One liter is 4.23 US cups. If your recipe uses metric cups of 250 mL, as in Australia and Canada, a liter is exactly 4 cups. This converter uses the US cup of about 236.6 mL. The gap is small for one cup but adds up over a large batch.
A US gallon is 3.785 liters. A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 liters, about 20 percent more. UK pints and fluid ounces differ too: an imperial pint is 568 mL, while a US pint is 473 mL. This converter uses US units only, so convert UK figures through liters.

One US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL, so 30 mL is a handy estimate. A 500 mL bottle holds 16.9 US fluid ounces. The UK fluid ounce is a little smaller at 28.41 mL. Fluid ounces measure volume, so they are not the same as ounces on a kitchen scale.
