Which Favicon Sizes Does a Website Need?

The Favicon Generator turns one image into a full set of site icons: PNG files from 16 x 16 to 512 x 512 pixels and a favicon.ico. It also writes the HTML link tags to paste into your page.

A favicon is the small icon in a browser tab, a bookmark or a home screen shortcut. Different places ask for different sizes. Tabs use 16 and 32 pixels. iPhones and iPads use a 180 pixel Apple Touch Icon for home screen shortcuts. Android and installable web apps (PWAs) use 192 and 512. The favicon.ico bundles 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions in one file, which older browsers and some tools still look for at the site root.

Start with a square image of at least 512 x 512 pixels. PNG or SVG with a transparent background works best. A non-square image is not stretched or cropped. It is centered on a transparent square, so crop it square first if you want it to fill the icon. Keep the design simple, because fine detail and small text disappear at 16 pixels. Check the 16 and 32 previews before you download.

Download single sizes, the favicon.ico, or everything as one ZIP. Put the files in your site root and paste the link tags into the head of your HTML. The tool does not create a web app manifest, so list the 192 and 512 icons there yourself if you build a PWA. Images up to 20 MB are resized in your browser. There is no single size. Browsers use 16 x 16 and 32 x 32 in tabs, Apple devices use 180 x 180, and Android and web apps use 192 x 192 and 512 x 512. This tool makes all of them from one image, plus a favicon.ico holding 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions.
Upload your image, click Download All as ZIP, and put the files in the root folder of your site. Then copy the HTML link tags shown by the tool into the head section of your pages. Browsers cache favicons heavily, so a hard refresh or a new tab may be needed to see the change.
A square PNG or SVG of at least 512 x 512 pixels with a simple, bold design. Logos with thin lines or small text become unreadable at 16 pixels. A transparent background suits browser tabs, but Apple home screens may fill transparent areas with black, so a solid background can look better there.
It is still worth having. Modern browsers can use the PNG files through the link tags, but some browsers and tools request /favicon.ico from the site root by default. The generated file contains 16, 32 and 48 pixel images in one, so it covers those cases.
