mammoth.js reads the document XML inside the .docx and keeps only the text. Older binary .doc files are not supported.
- Upload a .docx Word file by clicking the drop zone or dragging the document into it.
- Wait for mammoth.js to parse the document and extract all text content.
- Review the extracted plain text, which keeps paragraph breaks, along with the word, character, and paragraph counts.
- Copy the text to your clipboard using the copy button, or select specific sections manually.
- Optionally download the complete extracted text as a .txt file for use in other applications.
Getting Plain Text Out of a Word File
The Word to Text Extractor pulls the plain text out of a .docx file. You get the words of the document body in reading order, ready to copy or save as a .txt file. You do not need Word installed.
It helps whenever you want the words without the formatting. You might paste a report into a web form, move content into a new site, or check the word count of an essay. It is also handy for feeding text into another tool, such as the Word Counter or the Readability Score Calculator.
The text comes out as simple paragraphs, with a blank line between each one. Headings become ordinary lines. List items lose their bullets and numbers. Each table cell becomes its own paragraph, so the table layout is gone. Page headers, footers and images are not included. Next to the text you see counts of words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus a reading time based on 250 words per minute.
The extractor only reads .docx files, the format Word has used since 2007. A .docx file is really a ZIP archive of XML files. The mammoth.js library opens it in your browser and reads the text, so the document is never uploaded. Older .doc files use a different binary format and are not supported. Open those in Word or LibreOffice and save them as .docx first. Files up to 20 MB are accepted.
