The diameter is 80% of the shorter side (600 x 0.8 = 480). PNG is used so the area outside the circle stays transparent.

  1. Upload a photo you want to crop into a circular shape.
  2. Drag the circular overlay to position it over the area of the image you want to keep.
  3. Use the Circle Size slider to include more or less of the image, and the Center X and Y sliders for fine positioning.
  4. Check the output size shown below the preview - it matches the circle diameter in original image pixels.
  5. Download the circle-cropped image as a PNG with a transparent background.

Making a Round Profile Picture

Circle Crop cuts a photo into a circle and saves it as a PNG with a transparent background. It is made for profile pictures, avatars and round thumbnails.

Upload a photo and a circle appears over it. Drag the circle onto your subject, and use the Circle Size slider to include more or less of the photo. Size is set from 10% to 100% of the shorter side, starting at 80%. The Center X and Center Y sliders fine-tune the position. The preview shows exactly what the round image will look like.

The output keeps the original pixels, with no scaling. Its width equals the diameter of the circle in the source photo. So a full-size circle on a 1200 x 800 photo gives an 800 x 800 PNG, and the same circle at 50% gives 400 x 400. If a site asks for an exact size, scale the result with the Image Resizer. Keep it as PNG, since JPEG would fill the transparent corners with a solid color.

Most social and chat apps crop your uploaded photo into a circle anyway. So why crop it yourself? It lets you control the framing, and a round PNG with transparent corners is exactly what you need for email signatures, slides, websites and team pages. Center the face with some space above the head, because a tight crop can clip hair or chin.

The corners outside the circle need to be transparent, and JPEG cannot store transparency. It would fill them with a solid color, turning your circle back into a square. PNG keeps the corners see-through, so the round picture works on any background color.
Usually not, because most platforms show your square photo inside a circle automatically. Cropping it yourself helps you see the final framing. It also gives you a truly round image for places that do not crop automatically, such as email signatures, presentations and web pages.
