US, UK, EU and Japanese Shoe Sizes

Shoe sizes follow different scales in each region. In this converter's chart, a men's US 10 is a UK 9.5, an EU 44 and a Japanese 28, which fits a foot about 28 cm (11 in) long. Pick men, women or children, choose the system you know and enter your size.

Each system counts in its own way. Japanese (JP) sizes are simply foot length in centimeters, which makes them the easiest to check with a tape measure. US and UK sizes use steps of a third of an inch, but start from different points. In this chart, men's UK sizes sit half a size below US, and women's UK sizes sit two sizes below US. EU sizes use a smaller step of two thirds of a centimeter. That is why a men's US 8 and a women's US 8 are not the same shoe.

The chart covers men's US 6 to 13, women's US 5 to 11 and children's US 1 to 6. Sizes between rows, such as 8.25, are worked out from the rows on either side. A size outside the chart shows the nearest one with a note. Below the result, you get the approximate foot length in centimeters and inches and the full chart for the group you picked.

Brands do not all follow the same chart, and width matters as much as length. Treat the result as a starting point. The best check is to measure your foot and compare it with the brand's own chart. In this chart, a men's US 9 is an EU 42.5 (UK 8.5, JP 27). A women's US 9 is an EU 40.5 (UK 7, JP 25.5). The gap comes from the different starting points of men's and women's US sizes. Always check the brand's chart, since EU sizes vary by maker.
A common rule is that women's US sizes run about 1.5 sizes above men's, so a women's 9 is roughly a men's 7.5. This chart follows that rule, so a women's 9 has the same 25.5 cm foot length as a men's US 7.5. Under each result, the converter also shows the matching men's or women's size. Compare foot length with the brand chart to be sure.
Stand on paper with your heel against a wall and mark the tip of your longest toe. Measure from the wall to the mark in centimeters. That is close to your JP size. Measure both feet, use the longer one, and measure in the evening, when feet are at their largest.
The two countries count women's sizes from different starting points. In this chart, men's UK sizes are half a size below US, while women's UK sizes are two sizes below. So a woman who wears a US 7 usually needs a UK 5.
