Dice Rolls and the Odds Behind Them

This dice roller throws 1 to 10 virtual dice and adds up the total for you. Pick a standard die (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100), or choose Custom and set any die from 2 to 1,000,000 sides.

Every die is rolled on its own with secure random numbers from your browser. The tool also skips the rare random values that would make some faces a little more common. This flaw is called modulo bias. So each face has exactly the same chance. The Roll button spells out what you are about to throw in dice notation. For example, Roll 3d6 means three six-sided dice.

Rolling more than one die changes the odds of each total. With one d6, every number from 1 to 6 is equally likely. With two d6, the totals bunch up in the middle. There are 36 ways two dice can land, and 6 of them add up to 7, so 7 comes up about once in every six rolls. A 2 or a 12 needs one exact pair, so each shows up about once in 36 rolls. That is why 7 matters so much in games like craps and Catan.

For tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons, roll what your character sheet asks for and add any modifier yourself. The Statistics panel tracks total rolls, total dice and your average per die. The History keeps your last 20 rolls in a form like 2d6 [6, 3] = 9. If you just need a number in a range, the Random Number Generator may be quicker, and for a plain yes or no you can flip a coin.

Seven. Two six-sided dice can land in 36 ways, and 6 of them add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4 and the reverse), so 7 comes up about 16.7% of the time. The totals 2 and 12 are the rarest, with one way each, or about 2.8% each.
It is standard dice notation. The first number is how many dice to roll and the number after the d is how many sides each die has. So 2d6 means two six-sided dice added together, and 1d20 means one twenty-sided die. The Roll button on this tool shows the notation for your current settings.
Choose d100 in the Sides per Die menu. It gives a number from 1 to 100 in one roll, each with a 1% chance. At a real table, players often roll two ten-sided dice for tens and units instead. The result has the same odds, so you can use either.
The tool rolls the dice and adds the dice together, but it does not add modifiers for you. Roll 1d20, then add your bonus to the number shown. For example, a roll of 14 with a +5 modifier gives 19. This keeps the roller simple for any game system.
For a fair die, the long-run average is the number of sides plus one, divided by two. That is 3.5 for a d6, 10.5 for a d20 and 50.5 for a d100. The Average box in the Statistics panel shows the average per die across all your rolls, which moves toward this value over time.
