Names are shuffled and dealt out one at a time, so balanced teams never differ by more than one member. Shuffle Again gives a new random split.

Splitting a Group Into Random Teams

This team generator shuffles a list of names and splits it into 2 to 20 random teams. With Balance team sizes on, team sizes never differ by more than one person, so 23 people in 4 teams become teams of 6, 6, 6 and 5.

The shuffle uses the Fisher-Yates method, a standard way to mix a list so that every order is equally likely. The random numbers come from your browser's secure random source. After the shuffle, names are dealt out like cards: the first to Team 1, the second to Team 2, and so on around the table. Because the order is random, who ends up together is random too. Shuffle Again gives a fresh split of the same list.

Turn Balance team sizes off and each person drops into a random team on their own. Sizes can then vary a lot, and with a small group a team can even end up empty. Use that mode only when uneven teams are part of the fun.

Need teams of a fixed size? Divide your headcount by that size. For 30 students in groups of 3, enter 10 teams. You need at least as many names as teams. Names that appear twice are kept as two people, which helps when two players share a first name. Add a last initial so you can tell them apart.

The Summary shows the total, the number of teams and the average team size. To pick just a few people instead of splitting everyone, use the Random Name Picker.

No. It only balances team sizes, and who goes where is left to chance. For games where skill matters, you can shuffle a few times until the teams look fair, or pick two captains first and then randomize the rest. The tool has no way to keep certain people apart.
